This year's Manimahesh Yatra in Himachal Pradesh encountered significant interruptions due to extreme weather, including heavy rains and landslides. The pilgrimage, which was set to run until August 31, was cut short, leaving many devotees stranded in the area.
Official reports indicate that approximately 15,000 pilgrims found themselves trapped between Dal Lake and Chamba. With roads impassable, rescue teams utilized footpaths and helicopter services to assist those in need.
The Indian Air Force deployed Chinook and MI-17 helicopters for the rescue mission. On one day alone, the Chinook successfully airlifted 524 pilgrims, along with three deceased individuals, while the MI-17 transported 64 people and two bodies. Many of those stranded in Bharmour were flown to Chamba, where the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) provided nearly 195 free buses to transport them to locations such as Pathankot and Kangra. To date, 8,379 pilgrims have been safely evacuated.
The rescue operation involved a collaborative effort from the district administration, police, NDRF, and various volunteer groups. Relief camps and medical assistance stations were established along the route to aid evacuees.
Sadly, 17 fatalities have been reported during the operation, with most bodies returned to their families. Despite rumors of severe conditions, many pilgrims and medical staff dismissed these claims. One pilgrim stated, “We came down from Dal Lake just yesterday. The NDRF team ensured our safety. The rumors were unfounded.”
Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Repaswal remarked, “The helicopter rescue operation has officially ended. However, if any pilgrim is still unaccounted for, families can reach out to the helpline at 98166-98166. Search efforts will resume if needed.”
